Vargas is a big part of the costa rica culture; she’s one of the mentors of the tico literature.

Last Friday I was announced that the singer of 93 years and from Costa Rica was one of the candidates in the thirty-second edition of the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts, call which closed on March 15.

Vargas will face the Cuban-born musician Ramón Valdés Amaro, "Bebo Valdes", also 93, proposed by a radio network; these are the only two applications that are known at present.

This is the second time the artist is nominated for this award in 2004 after the jury ruled in favor of Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucia. Back in the days there were costa rica travel specials to see her performed.

Although this time Vargas has a lode of her latest album, "Luna big," a collection of poems by Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca that the singer recites his most popular songs of substance as "La Llorona" or "Macorina" or "Cross of oblivion."

On April 15, she appeared at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City which caused a huge buzz to see the artist, who despite being in a wheelchair appeared to have infinite energy.

"We consider as a candidate Chavela very strong for his art, for his tenacity and so direct communication you have with public of different ages and cultures", the statement from Eduardo Llerenas, director of Discs Corazon, said

Jurors will begin on May 8, to choose the winners in eight categories of the Prince of Asturias Award in this year: Arts, Social Sciences, Communication and Humanities, Scientific and Technical Research, Letters, International Cooperation, Sports and Concordia.
